Idris Elba Reprises 'John Luther' Role for BBC

Luther will be back.

Idris Elba is returning to his award-winning role as the uber dishy, ever-complicated detective John Luther in a new four-part series of the BBC America show, Luther. While an air date has yet to be announced, filming is scheduled to begin in early 2018.

"I am thrilled that we have been able to bring it all together. I look forward to putting the coat back on," Elba said Monday in a statement. The actor has won Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for the lead role, which also has earned him multiple Emmy nominations.

Fans, however have already weighed in, hoping beyond hope for the return as well, of Luther's counterweight -- Alice Morgan (played by actress Ruth Morgan). In what has become a tense cat-and-mouse game for the enigmatic detective and the lovingly psychotic murderer, viewers are eager to have the two either battle it out once and for all -- or ride off into the sunset, together.

SPOILERS: Audiences have seen the demise of Luther's wife, Zoe and his best mate Justin, but there remain a few loose ends: Whatever happened to the ditsy sister cop, Erin Gray, (Nikki Amuka-Bird) after being shot by a crazed gunman. Is it worth having her come back -- despite her hatred for Luther? May be good to get another Black face in the mix, who is not disruptive. Really, Amuka-Bird's character came in like a flash of bitterness... Also, does Luther have any family? Did Mary go the way of the dinosaurs? Can we get another love interest? Anything is possible, but we will have to wait until 2018. In the meantime, catch up on Luther, Series 1-4 online.
